The Northern Frontier

Overview
The north was first populated in the 3rd century by Brennèl and soon developed its own distinctive self-understanding. Peasants and nobles alike, they were northerners first and foremost and more nominally brennae. When Errion took over in 613, little changed as most of the noble families hailed from the same roots as the Erro families. Though the region was developed more under Errion's rule and tied closer to the great kingdom, it nevertheless retained its individuality. At the turn of the 9th century, Errion had largely abandoned its attempt to assimilate the north more fully into the kingdom and the region was governed largely independently of the will of Amenor. Following the third magewar, the north was virtually abandoned by Errion and became a region left entirely to define itself for the first time in over 600 years. The region escaped relatively unscathed from the third magewar as the invading armies suffered far worse from the winters than the natives and the local blackfolk tribes were more inclined to fight the invaders than join them.
Today, the north is a largely untamed wilderness scattered by villages and towns with a handful of city-states dotting the land. A distinct characteristic of the north is the unusually high amount of spirits inhabiting the land compared to the rest of the west. With human settlements more scarce in the north than elsewhere, the spirits are as much rulers of the land as the nobles and are in many places venerated and paid tribute to as such.
