Carmello Elia was born August 19, 1906 in Hoboken, New Jersey, the first son of Maria and Nicola Elia, just 13 months after Maria joined her husband in the United States. Carmello changed his name to Thomas Robert as a young adult. He moved to Norwich with the rest of the Elia family and became a neighbor of Fances Raffaele.
Tom and Frances became sweet-hearts, marrying on October 8, 1932. They moved into Frances' parents home after they married and continued to live next door to the Elia family on West Railroad Street, Norwich, New York.
Tom worked at Bennett-Ireland in the foundry for many years and also was a lawn care man, a handy-man, and baby-sitter for J.B. Turner's family (J.B. was the president of Bennett-Ireland). His other main job after retiring from Bennett-Ireland, was as a custodian in the Chenango County building in downtown Norwich. What Tom loved best of all was gardening, being outdoors, and taking his daily walks. That love motivated Tom and Frances to buy a new home on Plymouth Road in Norwich in 1960, to get a little farther from town away from the city noise and soot.
On December 1, 1935, Frances and Tom's daughter, Mary, was born. Josephine was born on April 22, 1937. Both girls would end up have families of their own, and Tom and Frances enjoyed spending time with their grand-children. Tom passed away in 1992 and is missed greatly.
Frances Raffaele Elia
Frances was born in Norwich, New York, on February 26, 1910, the daughter of Pasquale and Josephine Raffaele. She grew up in the house next door to the Elias with her siblings Grace and Angelo.
For most of her married life, Frances worked at Norwich Knitting Mill. She welcomed her parents into her home when they were no longer able to care for themselves. She loved cooking and enjoyed being a member of Home Bureau, Crocheting, and Knitting. Frances passed away in 1980.
