Languages

From Dynasts End

Below is a list of all languages spoken in Ivalice along with a basic description. All of the following languages are fictional, despite similarities they may share with existing languages. So, even though Rozarrian might be based on Spanish, the mods ask that you don't cram your Rozarrian character's dialog with Spanish. Common greetings and titles, however, are allowed, as well as common nouns that are not easily translated, such as foods, drinks and articles of clothing.

Many races, such as the Nu Mou and Moogles, are rumored to have had their own languages once. No documentation has yet been discovered to verify the existence of such languages.

[edit] Archadian

After the wide expansion of the Archadian Empire, Archadian has become the lingua franca of Ivalice. Most scholarly works are written in Archadian and the language is invaluable to tradesmen the continent over. Only the most isolated and/or uneducated of beings in Ivalice cannot at least carry on a casual conversation in Archadian. Even the majority of Rozarrians, who have never been under Archadian control, learn the language.

As a point of reference, Modern Archadian is comparable to Italian.

[edit] Old Archadian

A scholarly language, Old Archadian today is rarely spoken or written in. It is used primarily in the translations of ancient texts, or to compare the linguistic similarities of languages spoken on terrestrial Ivalice.

As a point of reference, Old Archadian is comparable to Latin.

[edit] Bhujerban Archadian

A regional dialect of Archadian primarily spoken in Bhujerba and its neighboring skycities. Continental Archadians look down upon it, claiming that it is a butchering of a proper language.

In the video game, Sanskrit words infuse the language of the Bhujerbans. A list of all Sanskrit words officially used can be found here. Aside from the greetings and titles allowed, please do not use any Sanskrit words that do not appear on that list in-character.

[edit] Bangaan

Due to the Bangaa's unrefined vocal cords, Bangaan is impossible for any other race to understand, let alone speak. The exception to this is the Bangaa's written language, which can be learned by outsiders fairly easily.

[edit] Dalmascan

As a point of reference, Dalmascan is comparable to Portugese.

[edit] Garif

[edit] Landisian

Fewer and fewer people are being taught Landisian, as it has been supplanted by Archadian as the official language of Landis.

As a point of reference, Landisian is comparable to Romanian with German infusions.

[edit] Nabradian

Members of the Nabradian diaspora fall into two categories: those who want to forget their heritage and those who hold fast to it. Among the latter group, Nabradian is commonly spoken, though only while in the sole company of other Nabradians. Few foreigners, aside from scholars, can speak it.

As a point of reference, Nabradian is comparable to French.

[edit] Lemures

As a point of reference, Lemures is comparable to Old English.

[edit] Rozarrian

As a point of reference, Rozarrian is comparable to Spanish with Arabic infusions.

[edit] Urutan-Yensan

As a point of reference, Urutan-Yensan is comparable to a scary as fuck language that tells you to get in the car.

[edit] Viere

As a point of reference, Viere is comparable to Icelandic. BJORKISH
