[edit] Appearance
Diya is a performer. Every move and smile he makes he does with the intention of being seen. He's very physically aware and self-confident and takes pride in his looks, which he believes are his only asset to others. He exemplifies Rozarrian standards of beauty and masculinity - thick, dark, wavy hair, dark eyes, tan skin, a strong jaw, broad shoulders... One would be hard pressed to find any physical imperfections in Diya whatsoever, a fact that he's well aware of. He uses his looks to his advantage, radiating effortless charm and sex appeal. Most are willing to overlook his general ignorance and lack of discretion in favor of his physical merits.
Still, regardless of his many efforts, his looks haven't been enough to get him out of the Grounds. His clothes are old and faded, often hand-me-downs from his father or grandfather and fit poorly. He bathes only as often as he can afford to. Most of his attempts to 'clean up' are laughable, and he spends most of his time 'rogueishly' dirty.
[edit] History
Born and raised in the Grounds of Tartessos, Diya was the only son and oldest child of a poor couple. His father was frequently called off to drill oil in the Yensan sandseas, and shortly after the birth of Diya's sister Ruse, he never came back. The family of three moved in with Diya's grandfather on the edge of the Grounds after that, and his mother took a job as a maid in a noble household. Diya largely occupied himself either by torturing his younger sister or following his grandfather around while he ran errands, and was fascinated by the thieves and pirates that populated their slums. He wasn't terribly concerned that he was now missing a father and simply equated his grandfather as his replacement. He saw his mother little, as her job took up a majority of her time, and when she came home one day to announce that she was with child he only saw this as heralding another sibling for him to boss around. It was only when his mother fell seriously ill from her pregnancy that he began to worry, and when she died delivering his youngest sister, he fell into shock.
Refusing to have anything to do with his youngest sister, Diya kept more and more to himself, or frequented the taverns in the area, watching men play cards over their shoulders. He became a regular fixture there, and many of the men used him to cheat off of one another. As he grew older he learned he could even charm the barmaids into bringing him drinks, which ended in him spending many afternoons draped over tables, sound asleep. His grandfather, though worried, tolerated Diya's absences and spent his own time raising his two granddaughters. The eldest of the two, Ruse, left suddenly when Diya was 19, only later sending a letter to explain that she was getting married to a merchant in Rabanastre and would not be coming back. While his grandfather accepted the announcement with resignation, Diya was furious. When Fayruh did the same two years later and disappeared to Bhujerba, Diya cut off all contact with both of them, burning any letters they received from his sisters despite his grandfather's protests.
He's never taken a job, instead insisting he'll make his fortune elsewhere, either through gambling, stealing, or cheating those who have it. His grandfather works as one of many low-paid smiths in Tartessos, and luckily makes enough to feed them both when Diya gambles too ambitiously. The young thief is currently looking for a particularly rich pocket to pick, and can usually be found loitering in or outside taverns in the Grounds.

Keywords: Forceful, headstrong, reckless, charming, uneducated, stubborn, vain, dissatisfied, eager, tactless, confident, and naive.
Headstrong and confident, Diya as a force can overcome most obstacles. He relies on his looks to get his way and over the years has learned exactly how to manipulate them. A smile and flattery works on women, a smirk and a crude joke on men. To a degree he's proud of this. If he didn't have his looks he knows he'd be more or less helpless, but on the other hand he despises others for caring for him solely because of them. He doesn't like most people and finds very little guilt in cheating them or stealing from them, and makes a habit of both. On his bad days he justifies this by telling himself he's not just doing it for himself, but also to care for his grandfather - which, while partially true, is definitely not his prime motivation. He doesn't believe he should be where he is - poor, trapped - and treats everyone as though they were personally responsible for this unfairness.
Around friends he's less defensive. Playful and loud, Diya always tries to be the center of attention. Around women he's especially shameless, coaxing and teasing until he has them completely wooed. Despite how easy he finds it to get women in bed, he's never courted and has little prospect of ever becoming a husband. He's good looking but impractical, he's been told, and usually simply serves as the attractive middle-man.
[edit] Other Information
[edit] Miscellaneous
- Languages Known Rozarrian and some Archadian
- Skills Can pick most locks, skilled pickpocket, decent cook, and excellent card player.
- Strengths Really ridiculously good looking. Can charm the skirts off of most women, is extremely confident, not easily dissuaded, can touch his tongue to his nose (4srs), could sleep through anything, and dances a mean hoochie choochie. (That last one is not real.)
- Weaknesses Uneducated, bullheaded even when he's very obviously in the wrong, shallow despite hating shallowness in others (hello hypocrisy!), acts without thinking, has no concept of propriety, and will do just about anything for the promise of money.
