Liam is a freshman in the university section of Dunehelden Academy. He is a mortal, majoring in music.

Liam was born and grew up in Tralee, Ireland. He was a normal guy until his seventeenth birthday, when his twin sister Evelyn Farrell was killed in a drive-by shooting, and died in his arms. For some unknown reason Evelyn’s soul didn’t pass on to heaven, but ended up being confined in Liam’s mind. She can feel everything he feels on a physical and emotional level, but she can also feel emotions independent of him. She also talks to him, and he hears her as an audible voice coming from inside his head. He mostly communicates back with his thoughts, but occasionally he’ll say something out loud by accident.

Liam seems to be adjusting well to life at Dunehelden, befriending vampires, mortals, werewolves and mages alike (though it's unsure whether he knows which of them are which). He is friends with Gussumaru Kenji, Ian Harris and Seele Steiner-Finlay, whom he has a strong crush on. When not absorbed in schoolwork, he spends much of his time composing music on his harp and cello and conversing with Evelyn. He was one of the first people to meet Jonathan Harris, the boy whom Ian Harris accidentally created out of thin air.
After Eve was caught sneaking Liam's body out of bed and walking around the halls late at night, Liam went to Smoke's office to discuss the possibility of freeing Evelyn from his mind. He told Smoke the story of Eve's death and everything prior to that. Smoke sent Liam to see Professor Bolin Honghui, which he did, and gave some psychological theories about the nature of his condition, confessing that he had doubts about his own sanity. This upset Evelyn, who reasoned that there was a magical cause of this, and maybe a magical solution.
Bolin accepted Evelyn's reasoning and called in Dr. Elliestraaeln Evans-Barros to scan Liam's mind and try to discern the cause of the two tangled minds. She discovered that Evelyn is or was a mage with mental powers, which Liam confirmed, and that there were traces of necromantic magic involved from an unknown source. Liam returned to Smoke to tell of his findings, and Smoke told him that he would try to trace the signature of the necromantic magic to find its caster.

Liam is a quiet, easygoing type of person for the most part, but he opens up more easily once someone gets to know him.
