Pokémon. The name for a mysterious species not recorded in traditional biological taxonomies. Due to similiarities in genetic and cellular structure, they must be considered a single species. When drawn into the capture device, known as the PokéBall, Pokémon become portable. Thus, the appeal of Pokémon has spread to people throughout the globe.

Although some have appropriated these containers to keep Pokémon as pets, the Pokémon contained within can be very dangerous... Therefore, only fully licensed trainers and breeders are permitted to handle them. Only licensed Pokémon trainers may legally purchase PokéBalls.

There is one more aspect of Pokémon that must never be underestimated. Pokémon evolve. It takes terrestrial creatures millions of years to evolve into a different form. Pokémon can transform radically in a very short period of time. This ability to adapt to their environment so rapidly is an incredible achievement! But the source of this ability is steeped in mystery.*

Even when not taking into account their amazing evolutionary capabilities, the variety among documented Pokémon is vast, with new subspecies still being discovered. Researchers currently place the number of unique subspecies at over four hundred and fifty, even without taking into account legends of rare or extinct beings.

From land to sea to sky, these creatures may inhabit every territory known to man - and perhaps beyond. It is the trainer's duty to help document these new Pokémon as they appear.

Even if not interested in the capabilities they show for battling against one another, trainers can interact with their companions in a myriad of ways. The only way to find out what path suits you - from renowned researcher to grand breeder to league master - is to step forth, and begin your journey...

...Into the world of Pokémon!
