Despair Draped in White was one of the children of Grandfather Lei and Grandmother Fung who followed the Shamanistic path of the Wu Keng. Mothering many children over the years, the Shamaness was devastated when the First Emperor began his purge of the Wu Keng at the urging of the Wu Lung. When her lover, Lu Heng was killed by members of her own family, she exiled herself into an umbral realm and encased herself in ice to flee the pain and betrayal.

Years later Lu Heng had been reborn and had tricked Hao and Dewei into entering the umbral realm to free Despair as revenge. His former lover though refused to act against her family, despite the grievous harm they had done to her enraging him further and abandoning her. Unable to return to the mortal realm, she returned to the spiritual sanctuary of her family, settling on an island in the middle of the lake and began to play her lyre. The despair and pain drifted throughout the dream scape of the family, affecting both the living and the dead, plaguing them all. Eventually her pain was alleviated by Miao Yin and Jade who traveled to her sanctuary and apologized to her for the wrongs committed against her.
