You head to the basement door and open it, the lights down there don't work, and haven't for a long time. The stair case before you extends down into a narrow walkway which is the only way to get down and get back up. You swallow nervously, but force yourself to move down the stairs slowly but surely until you feel the solid ground beneath your feet.
You walk in the dark space, feeling the walls with your hands in search of that cork board covered with Dad's guns. Eventually your hands find the board and you close your fingers around the first two guns you can. They feel a bit weighty in your hands, but you need to get out of this house.
Going back in much easier and you climb up with steps leisurely before inspecting your find in the daylight filling the kitchen. A sub-machine gun and a revolver. They are better than nothing, you think, and put them in your bag.
