You decide to try and stop the cats from fighting.

"Good kitties," you say soothingly to them. "Don't fight."

At the sound of your voice, the cats pause and look at you. For a moment, it seems as if you have successfully defused the situation. Then, in defiance, the cat nearest you pounces, scratching your hand. Satisfied that you have been sufficiently punished for your insolence, the cats resume their squabble.

Do you:

• Inspect your hand.
• Try once more to break up the fight.
• Attack the cat who scratched you.
