"This is The Zoo," Oscar says. "This is where the government dumps their unwanted experiments. They feed us, but otherwise they pretty much leave us alone."
That doesn't sound so bad. Beats working 9 to 5 at a job you hate so you can pay your mortgage and your taxes. But that doesn't mean you plan on sticking around for very long. "So what's up with everybody?" you ask. "Are they afraid of me or something?"
"No, not really afraid," Oscar says, glancing over his shoulder again. "You're just new, and that means we don't know what to expect from you. You could be a nice guy or you could be an asshole."
