For years visitors to Santa Cruz Island have talked about the legendary Gray Man, a solitary figure who dwells on the island permanently, avoiding tourists and rangers. Officially the National Park Service denies that such a man (or creature) exists, but get a few drinks into any park rangers who have served on the island and they'll all tell you tales of having seen the man at least once. Some claim he was like an animal, and would devour any tourist unfortunate or stupid enough to find themselves alone in the wilderness. Others say he was a benign or even helpful figure, helping lost and injured tourists, saving endangered local fauna, and scaring off any poachers.
Whatever the truth of the Gray Man's life, the skeleton of a man was found deep in the island's interior a few years back. Medical examiners were baffled, as dating put the time of death several decades ago, but the skeleton had wear and tear on it as if it had kept walking long after death.
