Panic and sprint in a random direction

From Create Your Own Story

You don't want whatever broke that branch to break you next. Your adrenaline at maximum, fight-or-flight reaction at its peak, you sprint across some open ground.

You know you're making enough noise to be tracked, as your breath comes in harsh pants and desperate gasps, not to mention your feet pounding against the ground with every step. But you don't care. You just want to get away.

As you sprint, you hear the sound of running water nearby. You don't realize how close it is until suddenly you slam to a stop at a cliff edge. By the sounds of it, it's a fast-moving river, and it's maybe 15 to 20 feet below you.

You gulp down air. A shadow, darker than the night, seems to loom up over you -- unless that's just your imagination playing more tricks. You certainly didn't hear anyone pursuing you... or sense pursuit in any other way either.
