Thelma smiles back. "Cool. I'll meet you at the front gate."

School is its usual uninteresting self. You mope your way through your classes, sit alone at lunch and wait for the day to end. Finally the last bell rings, and you shuffle off to the front gate. Thelma takes your hand in hers and leads you to a quiet place near the back of the school, where you two settle on a large rock under the shade of a tree.

"I like to come here," she says. "It gets me away from the crowd."

You nod. "I don't like crowds, either."

Thelma's gentle manner and her soft voice draw you out. She listens quietly as you tell her how much the world sucks, especially people.

"Come home with me tomorrow," she encourages. "I'm hosting a meeting of the People Haters Club. We hate everyone except each other."
