You plunge into the dark woods, dodging trees as you move as fast as you can. There always seems to be a tree in front of you, and you dodge at random to the left or to the right.
"You could move twice as fast if you ran on a path instead of always having to dodge trees."
An arm wraps around your body.
"Consider this a punishment for being stupid. It's the first time you've made a mistake all night."
Instead of a machete or a blade, the hand at your abdomen holds what looks like an X-Acto knife. With surgical precision, your skin is cut open just enough to allow your intestines to fall out a bit. Then the knife vanishes and a salve of some sort is applied, causing the bleeding to stop. Your jaw is pried open and a fluid poured into your mouth, which you swallow. The pain from being cut open goes away.
"Remember, you can run much faster on a path."
The arm holding you lets go.
And suddenly, out of the darkness, a path seems to appear. You can bear to the left, or you can bear to the right.
