Shortly after he was bought, he is treated cruelly, and made to do harsh labor in the tobacco fields. Every day he did this and he hated the smell it imprinted on his hands. When he asks for a different job, the master just pushes him and tells him to get back to work. It is just so hot for him and he’s still only 4 years old. He’s looked after by Lucy on the plantation. She is a teenage slave that really cares about Tobias and so she raises him as her own child. He lives on the plantation for 11 years and he learns the trade of being a blacksmith. At 15 years old he’s beaten for defending Lucy against the master’s abuse and he needs to put an end to this. He asks Lucy to come, but she refuses out of fear.
