You choose to ignore him and he quickly leaves.

A few minutes later, your mom's car pulls onto the driveway.

"That little snitch," you mutter.

"You better get to school, M," your sister advises from your bedroom door. "Mom looks like she's gonna kill."

"Damn right I am," says Mom from behind her. "Maria, get off the bed." You look at her, seemingly confused. "Now?"

A good hour elapses and you walk up to the stop where school buses usually pick up late students aware that your mother is watching you with her eagle eyes. You have to find a way to get out of going to school.

So you:

• fake a sickness and fall to the ground.
• run. There's no way Mom could catch you.
• shrug it off and just get on the bus.
