Cora's Embarrassing Day
As what seemed the natural progression of things, you get a job at the library. You She wanted to see those books badly, it was true, but you wanted ALL books badly. Being surrounded and paid is a good idea.
You worked up to getting the job for months, doing copious amounts of volunteer work and dropping hints to the librarians. Schooling and education was not the matter - it was just a matter of time. In months, you retrieved the job, and having just begun, so began the one hot day.
You show up to work fifteen minutes early, let in by the friendly, but slightly tired looking Evelyn. There are probably fifteen librarians here, now, as well as a small security staff, and you likely would never remember all their names. You learn how to log in, and promptly are given training on how to look up and locate books - something you are already fine at.
Not an hour into the day, Evelyn is pulled to help with the busy-ness picking up that morning. Too many schools are stopping by. You are left on the second floor - general genre fiction and literature, which is relatively empty. You are told to help anyone who came up to the desk, and if you get confused, to direct them to the first floor's information desk - likely they would be busy for a few hours yet.
You are not completely alone on the floor, although your slightly senior, though still young counterpart, Sylvia, was busy shelving books in what felt a mile away, far out of sight in the complete silence of the library's morning.
You know the rare books were on the fourth floor, and no one would ever see you. She also knew where the keys are - in an office on the first floor, although it was fairly busy there now, it being the children's floor and main checkout/entrance/exit area. You think if you do it right and get the keys, you may be able to at least sneak a peek - even read a few pages if you are lucky. No one would be in the room at all today, at least, so they said.
Or, you could simply do her job, and ask about it later. It occurs to you that maybe if you convinced an important patron they wanted to see the books, themselves, perhaps you would have leverage to go up as well.
