You squeeze your eyes close, hoping it would all go away, but it doesn't. You are still trapped in the cellar, Chang is still that hideous old man in black, curled up asleep in his chair, Charmaine is still sobbing on the box. And worst of all... your brother Kwan is still a grey rat, staring up at you, from where his name is scratched in the dust.
You feel that it is all your fault. If only you had gone home the usual way, if only you three had not gone inside this terrible house...
You hold onto the slimy walls for support. There has to be an answer to all this, a way out, a way back to your home, a way to make Kwan a human again.
Eeeeeeep!
Kwan is trying to get your attention. He has scurried across to the torch. He runs round and round it in circles.
Yes, of course! He wants you to take it before Chang wakes up!
You slip it onto your pocket. Then you put on your sneakers. Your feet have grown cold, but not as cold as the feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach.
Then, Kwan is on the move again! He races over to a shadowy corner and back again. Eeeeeeeeeep! Eeeeep! He sounds impatient. Again he races away and back to Charmaine and you.
You take your sister by the shoulders and whisper, "He wants us to follow him..."
She nods numbly.
Kwan is waiting for you two on the edge of the shadows. He points with a paw. You search the darkness. A door! He jumps up, scratching at it.
