You quickly pull up in front of your house. Alex and the man look over as you step up to the doorway, concern in your bright eyes. "Excuse me, I- "
"Who are you?" the man interrupts.
"This is my sister, Alice," Alex replies, looking sternly at the man.
Before the man has time to interrupt again, you make your case. "I overheard what you were saying. Look, Alex has been working for seven years to give me a normal life when he should have been going off the college, and hanging with his friends and forming his own future. He gave that up so that I wouldn't end up in some sort of foster home. We could really use that promotion, not for frivolties, just food and electricity, and I know Alex will pay you back, he doesn't steal or let other people pay for our needs."
The sincerity in your voice seems to strike the man. He takes off his sunglasses. "So...this is your sister." He glances at Alex, then looks back it you with interest. "You have a lot of faith in your brother. We'll just have to see if he deserves it."
"He does."
"Come on, Alice. Let's go inside." You follow Alex through the door, closing it behind you as the man turns to leave. "Thanks for that," Alex smiles, settling down on a worn floral couch.
