You pull over quickly before the man has time to storm off and jump out of the car. "Hey!" you shout, and both Alex and the man look over. "Who gave you the right to treat somebody in need like a piece of dirt?" Your eyes are icy cold as you step up and meet the man's sunglass-hidden gaze. "Alex has worked seven years to give me a normal life when he should have been going off the college, and hanging with his friends and forming his own future, and if he still has to borrow money from someone like you, it's sure as hell not because he's been lazy." The man opens his mouth to say something, but you don't give him the chance. "And what are those, $200 sunglasses? You know what we need money for? Food and electricity. So don't think you're being righteous when you threaten to ruin Alex's chances of getting that promotion. You're being greedy."
The man looks shocked. "So...this is your sister." He glances at Alex, then looks back it you. "I'm not being greedy, I'm just- it's just not...that's not it." He shakes his head in frustration. "You know what? We'll see who gets that promotion, sweetheart."
"I guess we will." You can tell that the 'sweetheart' comment is making Alex angry, and you don't want to get him into any more trouble. "Come on, let's go inside." You go inside, and Alex, after shooting a warning gaze at the man, follows.
"That was impressive," Alex smiles, settling down on a worn floral couch.
