You are part of an elite team of astronauts who were sent on an experimental space travel mission in the early 1970s. This mission involves using time dilation and stasis pods to allow live astronauts to explore far-off star systems in missions that take hundereds of years, while only aging a few months. The dashboard of your spacecraft, Icarus, has clocks that read out the amount of time that has passed both inside and outside the ship.
Inside, it is 1972. Outside, it is 2673. You have been on this mission for 700 years, and yet you have only aged 6 months.
The rest of your crew are already in stasis. You transmit one last report to Earth, and then walk over to your bunk. You look at your crewmates, Landon, Dodge and the lovely Stewart, who are all in stasis. You lie down in your bed, under Stewart's, and a glass panel slides down, sealing you inside your bunk. You soon feel yourself drift away into a peaceful sleep.
...
You awaken to find your pod has slid open. You look across to find that Dodge and Landon are groggily waking from their slumbers as well. As you rub your chin to find that you now have a beard, Landon jumps down from his bunk, wincing in pain and rubbing his muscles.
"Stewart?" you call above you. Dodge and Landon look into her bunk with a confused stare. As you stand, you find that Stewart's skin is stretched tightly around her bones--a large crack streaks across the glass of her stasis pod. She has been dead for years.
With a sudden, horrible screeching noise, water bursts through cracks in the hull of the ship. You rush over to the ship's console. Outside, it is the year 3978.
