You suppose there's really not much point speculating about all this.
You shrug. "I suppose we'll find out soon enough," you say, and board the carriage. To your surprise, Duran climbs in after you, and sits on the seat across from you.
You stare for a moment. He shuts the door and the carriage starts moving. "I thought you were staying," you say finally.
He shakes his head. "We're only supposed to escort you to the nearest village, so that you can be picked up at the inn. But all of the guards, as well as some of the servants, volunteered to remain in your service. So, if you'll have us, we'll be there fer ya."
"What about you?"
"I'm one of the guards, aren't I?" he says lightly.
"But- you've been in father's service for over 20 years and are a personal friend of his. Will he even be able to get by without you?"
He throws back his head and laughs. "You aren't getting rid of me that easily, lass! Yer father is a capable king, picked 'im as my lord fer a reason. 'Sides, someone's gotta keep you in line."
