You stand in the driveway clutching your garbage bag, watching as Tammy and William walk in the front yard. After what feels like an eternity, William turns around and notices you, "Come on then! We'll show you around the yard!" He sounds cheerful and warm, like a father should.
You jog over to them, powered by the rush of feeling wanted. You feel giddy for a moment, distracted by the sad thought that you can't remember the last time you felt this way. No matter what happened, this was home.
"I've got some gardening to do, and William was going to do some tree pruning for me. Who did you want to help?" Tammy is always smiling, but in a genuine way that makes you feel like you matter.
