Stay inside with Annabelle

"I'll stay inside," you say. "I don't want to leave Annabelle alone."

"That's a good idea," says Jack. "We'll be right back. You ready, Holly?" The blonde woman nods and she and her husband head out through the broken window, weapons at the ready. As soon as they're out of sight, you're struck by how quiet it is.

Going over to Steve's body, you search through his pockets, finding three spare magazines of ammunition for the pistol. You quickly and expertly load a magazine in, chamber a round, and make sure the safety is on before tucking the gun into your pants. Picking up the sword, you knock on the bedroom door. "All clear, Annabelle."

The nurse opens it, looking around. An axe is tucked into her belt. "Where are Jack and Holly?"

"They went out to hunt down any zombies that might be lurking nearby outside. They should be back soon."

"I hope so." Annabelle takes out her axe and twirls it. "The fewer humans there are, the more nervous I get. You'd think the castle would be safe, but we've lost several people to zombie ambushes." Looking at the corpse of poor dead Steve, she covers it with a blanket.

The two of you sit on the couch and wait. And wait. After about twenty minutes have passed, Annabelle frowns. "This isn't right. They should have been back by now."

"We haven't heard any shots," you say. "That's probably a good thing."

"Or very bad, if they were..."

"Ana, come on. Don't think like that. I saw how skilled they were during the fight. You've known them a lot longer than I have. You should know even better."

The nurse nods. "That's true. But I still wish I could go out there after them. I can't leave Joe alone, though, as long as that window is still open, and we can't board it up again until Holly and Jack come back."

"I can go out to check on them," you say.

"Are you sure about that, Marina? Going out alone is pretty dangerous."
