The captain presses the button right in the middle of the control table, labelled "Launch". For a moment you hear nothing. Then distant screaming and screeching of metal. The captain turns to face to the rest of you.

Captain: "I think it worked."

The elevator was locked on one side with titanium struts. When launching at that stage it starts veering off drastically, and eventually crashes into the building. This is why you are suddenly crushed by a massive space elevator.
