You clear your throat and take a slow, bracing breath, moving to stand between Kaerillian and the door. He wouldn't be the first to react badly to the news.

"What do you think of my ship?" you ask.

"She's beautiful, Captain, sir," he says. "A lovely little vessel."

"I named her the Incubus," you say, watching him carefully. "Do you know what an incubus is?"

"Aye, Captain, sir," he says with a nod. "It's a demon, a sex vampire that rapes people and drains the life out of them--"

"No," you say, your tone sharp enough to make him flinch. "An incubus must feed on sexual pleasure, but it doesn't harm the one it feeds from. It doesn't rape unless it goes too long without feeding and loses control. I know because I named the ship after myself."

"Yourself?" the boy says, frowning. "But I thought your name was--" He breaks off, his face going white as he realizes what you meant. His wide, blue-violet eyes stare up at you, darkened by fear. "Are- are you going to- to feed on me?" he asks, his voice quavering.
