Head to the Basement to retrieve the pen

It's Audrey's favourite pen, and she doesn't feel like losing things, not on her first day here. She knocks on the door a few times but there is no response. She then tries the knob gingerly and finds it is unlocked.
Going through it, she finds a barely-lit staircase leading quite far down. She can see her pen from here and-as her luck would have it, it's all the way at the bottom. She heads down and collects it quickly before heading back up, but before she's made a few steps someone calls out, "Hey!"
Audrey turns and notices a shabby old man with dirty overalls. He gave Audrey the impression that he had not bathed for a week or so. The badge he had pinned on him meant he was a technician of the college. Probably a fancier name for janitor. "What are you doing here?" He asks coarsely.
Audrey hesitates, she has the feeling that she was not supposed to come down here.
