"Yeah, we should have helped, but we couldn't." You tell Melanie. "We aren't trained to handle this sort of thing, Mel. We'd have gotten ourselves killed along with them."
"Maybe," she says. "It just doesn't feel right to leave them."
"Of course it doesn't. I agree." You reach over and squeeze her hand. "It's terrible, but it's a terrible choice I made. One that I have to live with. You had nothing to do with it."
She nods, and begins to speak, but as soon as she opens her mouth you hear a scream from across the light. You flip the wipers on to clear the windshield and see a girl running from the front of the store, chased by two men.
"Shit," you mutter, gripping your flashlight. Before you can say anything else, Melanie leaps from the passenger side and goes running for the girl. One of the men breaks off and grabs her, and you struggle to understand what the fuck she thought she was doing. You step out of the car into the rain, gripping the flashlight backwards. The men begin dragging the women in opposite directions. If you're going to save either of them, you have to ask fast.
