You speak to the cloud. "Hello," you say. The cloud stops writhing and becomes still.
"Excuse me..." you continue. "What... um... is something..." Your mind is blank. What, exactly, do you say to a cloud of smoke? You stand very still, desperately searching the crevices of your brain for the thought that you are trying to express. Finally, you speak.
"What is going on?" you ask it.
Nothing happens. As you turn away from the cloud, however, there is a hissing sound and the cloud expands. Your heart races, and you back away from it. Looking down at the floor, you find that the cats are still completely occupied in their fight over the milk. Whatever is taking place here is apparently of no interest to them.
