ASMT/You open the door

From Create Your Own Story

Your mom arrives a little early and you have to get the door. You still have no idea what she is planning and have no other option except to let it play out. As you open the door, your mom gives you a hug and you let her in.

“How have you been?” she asks.

“Good, mom,” you say. “How about you? Are you holding up OK.” Your father left you mom over a year ago and she has never really recovered.

Your mom smiles and says, “It’s been difficult, but getting by. It is good to get out of the house.”

As you make small talk, your aunt sets the table and places the pitcher dead center after filling the glasses. You notice that your mom’s glass is filled almost to the top, but the other two are only about half filled. She takes the glasses to the sink and she fills them the rest of the way with water to dilute the rum mixture. Your mom did not see any of this.

As you sit down to eat, you mom takes a small drink from her glass and puts it down quick. “What is in this?” she asks out of shock.

“Just a little rum,” your aunt responds calmly. “After what you’ve been through, thought you could use some.”

Your mom smiles at your aunt and says, “Your right, I could use a drink. This tastes a little strong though.”

“Trust me, Lisa,” she says as she uses your mom’s first name. “There isn’t that much in there. You know how strong rum is. You can’t hide it in anything.”

You suppress a cough when your aunt says there’s not much there and continue to wait for your aunt’s plan to move into action.

After a few bites your mom says, “I feel a little funny.” She is slurring her words and you know she has a good buzz going.

“Really,” your aunt says. “You look just fine. Why don’t you take another drink?”

Your mom lets out a laugh and says, “Sure thing, sis.”

You watch as your mom takes a big drink and sets the cup down sloppily, but free from spill. Looking at your aunt, your mom says, “This is really good stuff. You have to give me the recipe.” Her voice is so slurred you can barely make out what she is saying.

It does not take much longer for your mom to find her way to the couch and pass out. You look at your aunt and wait for her next move. You know she wants your mom like this, since she made her drink so strong, but have no idea why. Your aunt quietly clears the table without saying a word, but the look on her face was unmistakable. Whatever she was planning would happen shortly, or at least part of her plan.
