3. “Of course not, Nan,” you say sweetly, hoping to charm her. “I was just lost without you.”

From Create Your Own Story

Nan snorts. “Oh, I'm sure you were.” She says sourly. However, you think you see the slightest sliver of a smile on her pinched lips. You know she adores you, despite her harsh words and brash attitude. “Your sweet talk doesn’t work on me, girl. You’d try to charm the birds from the trees if you could.” She ends her speech with an inelegant snort.

Nan tries hard to keep up a fierce front, but it fails. Her indignance sputters out, and suddenly she looks very tired and... old. Nan scrapes a chair across your plush carpet and squats down behind you. Without so much as a by your leave, she rakes the comb through your hair. You expect her swipes to be fierce, in alignment with her seemingly irritated mood. But instead she is very gentle, smoothing your locks carefully and precisely. You know you should be grateful for her courtesy, but something feels heavy in the air. After the first few strokes it is clear that something is bothering Old Nan. She’s usually more ruthless than this. Do you dare ask?
