We took the usual package of slates, as well as a few Amar Chitra Kathas in English.

We did not take any further notebooks for the children as we were not expecting any new entrants. However, it turned out that there was a new Telugu student (Shankara Rao).

This time, Anupam and I proceeded to the teaching room while Ravitej and Anirbit went to call the children (Bhanukiran was coming late). It transpired that many of the Bengali people and their families had either gone home or had gone to the market, so we were able to get only two Bengali students. Among the Telugu people, we gradually managed to get around seven students, including a new student (Shankara Rao).

This time, for greater convenience, we had decided to note down whatever happened in a separate notebook for Spark activities. This could serve as a basis for wiki updates.

Initially, we wrote down the names of all the students on separate pages of the notebook, with each page expected to contain details of what was taught to the student on that day.

We also noted down the details of the new student (parents etc.)

[edit] Mathematics teaching

I started teaching mathematics to three Telugu students who knew a bit of English and were somewhat conversant with addition and multiplication: Narayana Rao, Satyanarayana Pideti, and Shankara Rao (the new student). For teaching them, I alternately used the notebooks of Narayana Rao and Satyanarayana.

I revised counting (English and Telugu), addition by dot-counting and by number line, and I introduced subtraction by dot-counting and the number line. We also did various things like adding homogeneous and heterogeneous kinds of objects.

[edit] Telugu teaching

Ravitej and Bhanukiran taught the younger kids the basic Telugu alphabet (or rather, made thme revise it). They corrected letter formation.

The older kids, when they got bored or tired of the mathematics session, took to copying stories from a Telugu storybook. They were then asked to read out from their own handwriting.

Anupam and Anirbit taught the two Bengali kids some of the Bengali script.

[edit] Amar Chitra Katha recitation

We had taken along some Amar Chitra Kathas (English) for our own reading and entertainment (while we were getting bored). The children seemed interested in the Amar Chitra Kathas we were reading, so Ravitej and Bhanukiran separately started reciting two of the stories. They did on-the-spot translation from English to Telugu adding their own explanations and elaborations. Ravitej recited the "Hanuman to the Rescue" story and Bhanukiran recited the "Baddhu and Chhotu" story.

[edit] Wrapping up

We ended by giving the kids some toffees. Further, we also asked the kids whether they had any textbooks and would like some. All the kids (specially the older ones) seemed excited at the prospect of getting textbooks. On the front of getting textbooks, the following were decided:

  • Anupam and Anirbit came up with the names of a few Bengali books and Anupam said he would contact Bodhayan and ask him to buy the books
  • Ravitej said he would ask his parents what books should be bought for these kids, and they would send the books over by parcel
  • We also decided to remind Bodhayan about getting the Amar Chitra Kathas or equivalents
