Early life
Jon Atsushi was born on November 30, 1993 as Takanori Atsushi in a middle-class family in Tokyo, Japan. He has an older sister named Imasaki Atsushi.
Career
2008-2012: Advancement into industry and unofficial works
Whilst in middle school he was stopped by a staff member of broadcasting station NTV one afternoon after school about appearing in a school drama named Scrap Teacher. Initially Atsushi rejected but after up to 'thirty minutes of following and persuasion' he agreed, believing it would be a fun experience. He later recalled the filming days changed his perception of acting, "I grew up thinking acting were for those who did not excel in school but on the set I saw all the actors, whether young or old working so passionately towards delivering the same goals and I was deeply touched."
By the time Atsushi was sixteen he had settled on the dream of becoming an actor but at the time had absolutely no desires of entering the industry, "All I wanted to do was act, I didn't want anything that might associate me with a lot of fame or public recognition, in short it wasn't part of the plan to act commerically." Sensing the importance to be trained professionally he decided to enrol in Horikoshi High School, a Japanese private high school in Nakano, Tokyo as there are show business courses as well as acting lessons included in the school program and his family couldn't afford external classroom activities.
Atsushi performed well in his classes and was ranked first for several subjects. However when he was eighteen his health decline and had to pull out of school for a whole year on health leave. He recovered and returned after thirteen months to finish his final year in 2012 and was placed in the same homeroom and acting class as singer producer Ophelia. The pair became friends and he was recommended for a series of private auditions to her own agency Clumsy Media after seeing his abilities during acting classes. He successfully passed the private audition and was offered with an exclusive contract. It is also known that Johnny's Entertainment had tried to scout him at the time as well, but he rejected as he felt that the company was too 'music concentrated'.
He underwent several months of additional acting training before appearing in his second drama Perfect Son on the same network but it did not serve as his official debut.
2013-2016: Debut and early works
Although he has been kept relatively unknown to the public by the company in order to prepare for when he appears in an offcial debut work his third minor character in the drama Rich Man, Poor Women garnered him much attention. Various news reported his exceptional appearance and he was the most searched public figure in the week when the drama teaser videos were released. The company was forced to reveal his name and background information in March after demands from the growing number of fans but stated that 'so far there are no plans of him debuting'.
On May 18, 2012 an official announcement was made in regards to his official debut work; his representatives announced that he has secured a role in the manga-adaption-film Black Butler and filming began on April 1, 2013 and finish mid-May. Upon release the film received negative critical reviews and was only a moderate box-office success. Shortly after he was cast in Haru wa Seotte and Say "I Love You".
In March, 2013 Atsushi was cast into his project of the year, the live action film Attack on Titan and filming began two months later, finishing in August. In April it was announced he had been cast into the film Shinjuku Swan. In July he was cast in NHK's 54th taiga drama series Flower Burns. On September 13, the casting in the drama Nobunaga Concerto was announced and began airing on October 13.
