Personality
Elena is full of confidence and sarcasm, two things that make her extremely unlikeable to anyone who can't take it. She believes in being polite to people who are polite to her, and so usually you will have no idea she dislikes you until you are rude to her - and then all bets are off. She has very low tolerance for the stupid, and has even less patience with people who are privileged and enjoy whining about how much their lives suck. She is self-reliant and hates relying on other people for anything, and so she tends to lash out at people who assume she needs their help. On the other hand, she recognizes when she needs help and asks for it.
Because of the combination of politeness and sarcasm, she is sometimes seen as cold and distant, but once she figures out that someone, as she puts it, "has a brain," she can become an extremely loyal friend. One thing she can't stand is betrayal, and so she will never give any of her friends over to any kind of authority, no matter what they're doing. However, if you desert her in a time of need, she will regard you as a betrayer and will never talk to you again. She is often attracted to the "bad boy" type, whether because of her own thrill-seeking sense or a desire to give her parents aneurysms.
In-Game History
Elena was raised in the shadow of her older sister, Diana, who was the perfect child. Diana made straight A's, was friends with everyone and never got into trouble. She was accepted into Annapolis, the naval academy, and later switched branches of the service to join the Marines. Elena, although she was also intelligent, never lived up to her sister's level and struggled to make B's. Her parents regarded Diana as a vast success and Elena as an unfortunate failure, and so around Elena's sophomore year, she decided that none of it was worth it anymore. She stopped struggling and fell to B's and C's in school, started staying out late at night and getting into trouble.
Her parents, thinking it was the crowd she had fallen into, moved the family out of Quebec where they had lived since Elena was very young and into Clairbourn. However, when this failed to improve Elena's attitude and she only started seeing more of the "unsavory types" they had moved to get away from, they deduced that there was no salvaging their younger daughter and seemed to write her entirely off. Elena, meanwhile, was having some of the most fun she ever had and making new, excellent friends.
Everything changed for her when on February 5, 2008 her family was notified by the Marine Corp that her sister had been killed by an IED while she was on a tour of duty in Iraq. Just like that, all of the focus in the family was directed at her. Diana's death hit Elena particularly hard, especially her family's sentiment that since they lost the perfect daughter, now they had to "make do" with the fuck-up. Elena began trying again, attempting to pull her grades up into some semblance of order and cutting off ties to some of her "unsavory" friends. She is currently sitting on a low B average and looking to go into senior year trying to get into a decent college. In reality, she's making herself completely miserable and has all but given up on her dream of becoming a CIA agent, thinking that her parents probably wouldn't approve. Her parents, concerned she might return to her old habits (and wanting to find out what had caused them in the first place), enrolled her in therapy. Her psychologist cycled her through a short series of anti-depressants before settling on Effexor, the only one that appeared to work. In reality, Elena didn't take her pills but threw away the doses to make it appear like she took them.
When Reno returned from Las Vegas, Elena became hopeful that she would finally have someone to talk to about everything that had been going wrong in her life. But Reno was carrying his own baggage from Vegas, and Elena only felt guilty piling on. After a couple of brief discussions about grief and where it leads you, Elena went back to not talking (and trying not to think) about Diana's death. Things became rocky with Reno when Elena realized just how much trouble he had gotten into in Vegas, and especially when she began to realize how disconnected her and her best friend had become due to the trauma Reno had gone through.
One of her fights with Reno led her to be in the parking lot of The Lantern late one May night - where she was kidnapped by members of the drug cartel Reno had infiltrated in Vegas. During the kidnapping, she shot one of her kidnappers to death. In the months of her captivity her kidnappers attempted to convince her that self defense wouldn't apply in a deadly force situation, and that she would be better served throwing in her lot with them. For the first couple of months (helped by regular contact with Reno) she was able to ignore them.
Relationships At a Glance
Reno: One of the first people she met upon coming to Clairbourn, Elena considers Reno to be one of her closest friends. They got off to a rocky start but that quickly turned around, and Elena feels she can talk about anything with him. However, Reno left for Vegas earlier in the year and gradually stopped calling her, and by February when her sister died he wasn't there for her at all. When he came back from Las Vegas, Elena briefly entertained thoughts of rekindling their "thing," despite repeatedly denying to anyone else that there ever was a "thing." Upon realizing that he had started dating Tifa while in Vegas, she decided to give in gracefully and let the two of them be happy.
Zero: Zero helped Elena out in a time of need, giving her a place to stay when she needed to get out of her house. She considers him and his family to be closer to her than her own family, and would do anything for them if they needed her.
Rufus Shinra: Elena isn't quite sure what Rufus is to her. Like Reno, they got off to a very rocky start, but she saw a sort of kindred spirit in him when she noticed how he got along with his family - about as well as Elena got along with hers. They went to prom together out of "convenience," so neither of them would have to go with who their parents set them up with. Elena doesn't trust him, but she finds herself almost liking him as a person despite herself.
