Hitsugaya Toushirou

Hitsugaya Toushirou (born 20 December) is a character from Bleach. He is the Captain (or "taichou") of Division 10. Little is known about the division. He works over Matsumoto, though he does not think of himself as a captain on the island.

Information
Background
Hitsugaya is the captain of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13. Very few people know more than this about him, especially since he doesn't provide very much insight to his life. He doesn't like to talk about it, comes across as having a bit of an attitude problem, and generally reads as a very petulant young man who probably doesn't deserve to be a captain.
However, there's a reason why people call him the child genius—and refer to him as the captain. He's extremely powerful, despite his small size, and he definitely worked extensively in order to become a captain. Part of his work might have been in connection to his friendship with Hinamori. Despite the extensive friendship and her older age, he always felt the need to protect her. When he entered the Gotei 13, this reversed somewhat, but he still became a Captain (whereas she became a Lieutenant under Aizen).
His life—the one he lived before arriving in the Soul Society—was very normal and he lived in a wealthy home with a family that cherished him. It was actually his petulant behavior that got him killed, as he chose not to listen to his mother about something and that eventually led to his death. He believed himself to be invincible, which is quite interesting given his persona in the Soul Society, and even more—in the Gotei 13.
Working with his Lieutenant Matsumoto Rangiku, he's the one who nosed out that Gin was involved with the conspiracy with Aizen. But even further, he found out that Aizen himself was still alive. It was a rather painful situation for Hitsugaya, especially since he learned that Aizen had brainwashed and had been using his good friend Hinamori all the time. This all led to a rather difficult battle with Gin, and the eventual circumstances that followed (Aizen and Gin leaving, and having to even face his failure in the situation).
He arrived with several other shinigami in Ichigo's world to prepare for what would come. He was working on training several of his subordinates (since he worked as their captain) in reaching their ban kai (even if it appeared that some of them already had). Upon returning to the Soul Society, he engaged in another battle which almost cost him his life, but his immense power still helped him in the end.
In Purgatory
Hitsugaya arrived in Purgatory not long after this battle and around when Orihime herself was captured. He moved into an apartment with Rangiku. That apartment also houses Ikkaku and Yumichika. He oftens chews them out for their less than innocent activities, along with Rangiku for her extensive drinking problems.
As a result of arriving away from the Gotei 13, Hitsugaya no longer thinks of himself as a Captain. However, he believes that there is a chance that he may have to take up those reins again if the act proves necessary.
