Robin

From Canonwars

Robin. Portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.

Robin is the leader and one of the main characters of the cartoon, Teen Titans, which ran for five seasons. While technically, he is not any one Robin--simply a mix of them all, he has Dick Grayson's background and an appearance based off Tim Drake's. Because of this, his real name (although never mentioned in the show itself) is Richard 'Dick' Grayson. However, he prefers to be called Robin.

Background

We can assume that Robin's origins are almost identical to that of the "original" Dick Grayson. He was an acrobat, a member of the Flying Graysons. His family fell to their death (as seen in "Haunted") while Bruce Wayne was in the audience. Bruce Wayne, also known as the Batman, took him in and trained him. He became Robin, the Boy Wonder. The rest is history. Until he decided to leave Gotham and go solo.

When Robin first arrived to Jump City, he was alone--mostly likely after a fight he had with his mentor. When he makes the acquaintance of his future team mates he immediately says that he wishes to work alone. However, he eventually becomes friends with them and they form a team--The Teen Titans. It's evident from the very beginning that Robin is a workaholic and that he takes his job very seriously. He immediately hit it off with his alien team mate, Starfire. Throughout the series, the Robin-centric episodes focus on his competitiveness, his seriousness, and his willing to put catching the villain before his friends. This is shown through his relationship with the villain, Slade. Slade had a growing obsession with Robin, and Robin returned the sentiment. Robin even invented an anti-hero alter ego--Red X--to attempt to catch Slade. He failed, and in the process lost the trust of his friends. When Slade gives him the stakes of his friends' death or working for Slade, he briefly becomes Slade's apprentice. However, his friends eventually convinced him to come back and he broke free of Slade's grasp.

Season Two explores the future of Robin, where he becomes Nightwing--another nod to the theory that Robin = Dick. It was here where his relationship with Starfire was expanded on more, with her jealousy over the "shotgun date" with Kitten. He became fast friends with Speedy and realized that he was, once again, behaving "hyper-competitively." Robin also came to learn that he had a doppleganger in another dimension. Kcid Nosyarg--or Larry. Larry's fanboying of Robin eventually boosted Robin's temporarily lowered ego (after having his arm fractured by Johnny Rancid). Terra's betrayal hit Robin particularly hard--as he too had once been under Slade's control, and attempted to help her. However, she wouldn't have it and attempted to destroy him as well as the rest of the Titans. In the end, and after Terra's end, she is made into an honorary Titan. Terra's end also brought the apparent end of Slade, as he fell into molten lava.

While the third season focused primarily on Cyborg and his ambition to be a leader, the third season also saw the reappearance of a familiar face--Red X. However, this Red X was a completely different person, leaving Robin baffled and feeling guilty for creating the villain in the first place. His relationship with Starfire was once again explored as Starfire's sister, Blackfire, arranged for her to be married. His determination to help Starfire and stop the wedding did not go unnoticed and Starfire finally felt at "home" on Earth. Eventually Cyborg went to lead Titans East, and "quit" Titans West. However, when Cyborg got in trouble and the original Titans had to rescue him, Robin & Cyborg made peace and Cyborg rejoined the original Titans.

Slade soon reappeared after literally making a deal with the devil, Trigon. Trigon is the demonic father of his team mate Raven, so at first Robin was startled that Slade seemed completely disinterested in him. Raven and Robin bond, as Raven freed him when she stopped time. During all this, eventually the Titans get stranded on some remote planet--Robin was no doubt stuck with Starfire, who was upset with him because he said she wasn't his girlfriend. Robin finally admits he has feelings for her, but that he just has trouble acting on them. This moment of happiness was interrupted with the prophecy that Raven was going to bring the end of the world on. Robin was the one that she revealed her secret to--and is ultimately Raven's savior during the battle with Trigon, as he goes through hell (literally) to save her. He is the one that finds her and returns her to the surface world (which by this time has been obliterated by Trigon) and is the one who kept trying to remind her of who she really was, so she could return to her formal self.

Beast Boy's old team, The Doom Patrol, resurfaces and along with them comes the villainous Brotherhood of Evil--led by the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. Robin thought he was doing the right thing by recruiting teen heroes from across the globe, but he was ultimately leading to their downfall. The Brotherhood was using the communicators that he was handing out to track and capture the Titans. However, Beast Boy managed to save the team, temporarily putting Robin out of the position of leader. In the end, Beast Boy stepped down and Robin ascended to his title again.

In Tokyo, Robin tracked down the villain Brushogun--and also his relationship with Starfire finally reached a climax, as the two finally enjoyed a kiss (one that wasn't for the sake of learning a language).

Purgatory

Since arriving in Purgatory he has made contact with Starfire and Raven, but hasn't heard anything from Cyborg or Beast Boy. He hasn't really decided what he plans on doing--as there is a large number of Robins in Purgatory already. Perhaps when Bruce shows up, he'll decide what he wants to do with himself and the future of the Teen Titans.
