Alex Summers is the younger brother of Scott Summers and Gabriel Summers. He is known as Havok. His powers rest within the plasma blasts that he can send through his body, a power that he has always had difficulty controlling. Aside from the plasma, he can collect various forms of energy and is therefore immune to it. He is one of the more reluctant X-Men, and often resents Scott for his more formidable position among the team (even if a part of Alex has always wanted to have his own team, as shown in Mutant X).

Background

The second son of Christopher and Katherine Summers, Alex and his brother Scott both survived an attack on an airplane when they were younger by parachute. It appeared that both parents had died (only Katherine had, but they eventually met up with Christopher in the future), and Alex and Scott went into an orphanage. Since the orphanage was controlled by Sinister, he chose Scott for his better genes, deciding that Alex did not have the same potential. Alex ended up living with a family where he had to replace their dead son. He did everything in his power to live up to their expectations, but he know he failed most of the way. The family itself was devoutly Catholic, but he ended up separating from the faith. Alex went on to study geophysics in college, and it was here that the X-Men found him and learned he was a mutant (after he was captured by the Living Monolith).

Alex didn’t join the X-Men for a while and was instead approached by Larry Trask. Alex acquired a suit that helped him control his abilities, and it was only after he was approached by Professor X to be a part of a mission that he ended up becoming an X-Men. It was during this time that he fell in love with Lorna (a relationship that would not end for many years).

After this and throughout the years, Alex has found himself with and not with the X-Men on and off. He led X-Factor for some time, shared adventures with Wolverine, and has found himself to be a rather difficult brother to Scott. He eventually disbanded and tried to get the X-Men back together when he was in an accident that landed him in a coma. While in this coma, he woke up in an alternate universe, where Scott had been taken off by the Shi’ar and he ended up leading a group similar to the X-Men. Alex found this situation to be rather taxing, but with time, he grew used to it. In this reality, he was with Madelyn Pryor (who had been with in his own reality for a time after he had been rejected and she had been rejected by former lovers) and they had a son named Scotty together.

He proved to be a formidable, if sometimes awkward, leader to The Six (his group) in this world, but he ended up going back to his world after a time to wake up and have to battle with the evil version of himself who actually belonged to that reality. He also woke up to find that he was thrown into an engagement with Lorna Dane, who he apparently no longer wanted, because he really wanted Annie, the nurse who had taken care of him while he was in a coma. Alex became Annie’s boyfriend and her son’s surrogate father after a while (after the engagement with crazy Lorna was canceled).

Eventually, Annie left and Alex realized he was still in love with Lorna. He led a team of the X-Men and had verbal spars with Bobby. He eventually followed Lorna when she left the X-Men after M Day and came back to announce that she was missing. Soon after, he ended up learning she was taken in by Apocalypse and being hurt. He helped save Lorna in the end and it appeared that the relationship might be rekindled.

Recently, and from the point he comes from, Alex learned that he had a brother named Gabriel. He and a team of X-Men are headed to the Shi’ar to stop him from hurting people or getting hurt himself, since he’s a violent and psychotic individual.

In Purgatory

Immediately upon arriving, Alex realized that his brother Scott was too wrapped up in things with Emma Frost and was experiencing a great deal of trouble. Thus, he stepped up to take his place as a leader, but somewhat reluctantly. He knew he could do it, but he didn’t entirely want to do it. Regardless, he ended up leading the X-Men’s search for the small boy Jamie at first, and was involved with going to get him from the reality where he and Frank were held.

Since then, Alex has become a leader of a team with his niece Rachel Grey and X-23. He’s gotten into a bit of an argument with Rachel over her relationship with Bobby Drake, but he revealed it was because he was on edge because it appeared that Scott had really abandoned the X-Men and he had no choice but to stick with the team. He’s also developed a friendship with Ky Kiske and has asked Ky onto his team.
