Backyard wrestling (or BYW in abbreviation), is a two-worded term to refer to the pro-style practice and hobby of professional wrestling in an unsanctioned, unsponsored federation, usually arranged by male friends in a backyard environment ranging between the males of 11-30 years old. Most backyard wrestlers are untrained athletes while some genuinely seek the training. Girls or ladies are barely seen in the activity and infamously play a valet or show up in attendance to their boyfriend or friend.

Futhermore, since the outset of backyard wrestling was heard of before the 1990's, it has ever-been an underground scene with little to no publicity although well-known. There are cases as seen today, whereas Backyard wrestling has expanded in terms of territory and has occured in parks, fields and other public areas with still little to no audience. During such festivities, home-filming and online video producing becomes a prominent source of promoting, distributing, trading, and exhibiting events to attract electronic viewers on a social video sharing service such as most popular today, YouTube as well as other publications. Moreover, BYW has developed a denigrating reputation due to its unprofessionalism, its unsanctioned and unfounded nature and the physical unnecessary violence and outrage of behavior the BYW craze in the 1990's showcased which approximately lasted the duration of 1996-2001, between the period pro wrestling television boomed to its high-ranking popularity when WWE and WCW competed in a ratings war that brought on "The Attitude Era".
