The party system

Bolivia has historically had multiparty political party system. Currently, the party system is dominated by two major parties, MAS and PODEMOS. In the past, the party system was dominated by a group of medium-sized political parties. Seats in the national parliament are elected in a mixed-member proportional electoral system. Until the 2005 general election, no presidential candidate was able to win a simple majority, coalition governments were the norm.
