Kura Nui

Name

"Kura" means "treasure" in Matoran. Thus, Kura Nui means "Great Treasure." It is unknown who named it that, and why, but it has sparked interest in many treasure hunters.

Discovery

While studying the Great Archives in Onu-Metru, a Matoran named Krene discovered a mysterious scroll lying at the back of a Rahi cage. Opening it, he found that it told the tale of Kura Nui, an ancient island. It spoke of a great treasure, but the scroll was deteriorated to the point that the description and location of the treasure could not be deciphered. Krene brought the scroll to the nearest Toa he could find: Uvenar, a Toa of Fire. Uvenar, jealous of Lhikhan's power, siezed this opportunity to add to his own power. He rallied many Matoran behind him, and led them on a quest to find the Great Treasure.

Corruption of a Leader

After many years of searching, Uvenar and the Matoran finally discovered Kura Nui. Uvenar organized the Matoran into digging groups, having them dig at various places in searth of the Treasure. At first, he walked among the digs, even helping the Matoran himself. Gradually, however, he became more secluded and mysterious. He diverted Matoran digging groups to have them create a huge spire, where Uvenar began to dwell. His appearences outside became less and less as time went on. He became strict to the Matoran, making them dig harder and faster. Many Matoran were fearing what had happened to Toa Uvenar, and rumors flew: some said that he was being controlled by the Makuta, while others said that he was going insane. One day, their worst fears were realized: Uvenar appeared at the door of this spire, no longer a Toa of Fire. He was now a Toa of Shadow, his mask looked like Makuta's. The Matoran were then put under extreme bondage, as Uvenar, corrupted by power and greed, searched for the Great Treasure.
