From Biol301
- There was a handout comparing plant and animal reproduction. It has many examples and mostly served to show there are few differences in mechanisms employed by the two groups.
Angiosperms
- Compose 90% of land biomass
- All have flowers and fruit
- Fruit = mature ovary conataining a seed or seeds
- Made when flowers are pollinated and eggs are fertilized
Gender Arrangments
- Separate Sexes (dioecious): holly or ash trees
- Hermaphrodites (monecious: one house): most plants
- Male and female flowers are separate: corn (a.k.a imperfect flowers)
- Male and female organs are together in the same flower: daffodils (a.k.a. perfect flowers)
- Often the female organ is in the center with the male organs surrounding.
Two Types of Pollination
- Showy flowers attract animals which then spread their seed.
- Wind / Water pollination plants are usually drab.
- An example is corn or an oak.
