1. Alex's parents are not exactly rich, raising all those kids. Mostly they live off the income of his oldest brother, who's a successful businessman of some kind or another. Alex gets a good-sized check from him about every other birthday (when his brother remembers). Charity/Pride ftw.
2. He's never met two of his brothers; the youngest-older-brother was the only one young enough to have been around much. He's a wandering artistic type. About a month around Christmas, when Alex was eight or nine, there was some sort of problem; there was a lot of yelling between the celebration, and Alex doesn't know why.
3. He's never been particularly good at math. He can get the theory, and he can get moving the little numbers and symbols around to make new groups of numbers and symbols, but what they have to do with each other largely escapes him. Sometimes he greatly regrets his major (usually during exams), but with effort he's doing all right.
4. Many people tend to presume he's gay. He doesn't bother pretending they're wrong.
5. He got mean early in high school. He used his considerable social abilities and nerd-lore to strike back at the people who usually teased him and people he liked. The plan succeeded a little too well, and he ended up really hurting someone... The details aren't entirely known to anybody but him.
6. After that, he got transferred. After seeing the kid, he felt bad about it- really bad- but never quite enough to try to undo the damage, even if he could. He still feels guilty about it sometimes.
7. He loves fresh-baked bread. Love.
8. Alex's parents are aging hippie types who moved to California and got stuck there; his father, specifically, is a professor at a community college, and his mother does crafts.
9. His eldest brother hasn't seen him, specifically, because he has a big family and a lot of responsibilities, though he might now that his kids are almost as old as Alex; his middle brother joined the military shortly around the time Alex came around, served for a while, and and has been stuck in bureaucratic hell for several years, though at least he's still alive; his youngest-elder brother is kind of the black sheep of the family, and really doesn't like Alex simply because Alex exists.
10. After some consideration- yeah, he's adopted. He was probably old enough to remember it. Given the family, the system must've been nicer to him than some people.
11. He likes dance music, and cold trancey stuff, mostly.
