The Kingsguard protects and serves the King of the Seven Kingdoms. The Kingsguard is led by the Lord Commander, currently Ser Barristan Selmy.
Ser Jaime Lannister slew King Aerys II Targaryen in the throne room during the Sack of King's Landing.
Robert Baratheon, King of the Seven Kingdoms arrived at Winterfell. Ser Jaime Lannister and two other knights of the Kingsguard were among the three hundred travelling with him along Queen Cersei, Prince Joffrey Baratheon, Princess Myrcella Baratheon, Prince Tommen Baratheon, Tyrion Lannister and Sandor Clegane. Cersei and her younger children had travelled there in a wheelhouse.
