The King of the Isles ruled the Iron Islands.

In the old days each islands had its own "salt king" and "rock king". The High King of the Isles was chosen among them.

Urron made the throne hereditary by murdering the other kings when they assembled for a choosing.

Urron's line was extinguished a thousand years later when the Andals swept over the islands.

The Iron Kings extended their rule far beyond the isles themselves, carving out kingdoms on the mainland. King Qhored could with some justice claim to rule "wherever men can smell salt water or hear the crash of waves". In later centuries Qhored's descendents lost the Arbor, Oldtown, Bear Island, and much of the western shore.

King Harwyn Hardhand conquered the Trident from Arrec the Storm King.

His grandson Harren the Black was vain and bloody. During the Wars of Conquest many of the river lords deserted to Aegon the Conquerer. Harren and his line perished in the burning of Harrenhal.
