Aryezi is the main language of Aryez, spoken by most of the country's inhabitants. The term, as generally used, is used to describe two languages: 1) Modern Aryezi, and 2) Classical Aryezi or Aryeza (which will be treated in a seperate article).

Modern Aryezi has four (4) main dialects. It is debatable on how mutually intelligible these dialects actually are. These dialects are: 1) Aryeji, spoken in northern and central Aryez, 2) Aryesi, spoken in southern Aryez, 3) Arzori, spoken in Arzor, and 4) Aryezizdari, spoken in Aryezizdar. All four dialects are descended from Classical Aryezi.

Almost all Aryezi publications, interaction, media, communication, and education takes place in Modern Standard Aryezi, which is a polished, standardized version of Aryezi primarily based on the grammar of Aryesi and the vocabulary of Aryeji with many features from Classical Aryezi mixed in. The dialect of Aina, the holy city of Aryez, located in central Aryez, is considered standard because of its purity in respect to Classical Aryezi. The Aryezadel dialect, being that of the capital of Aryez, is also commonly used. In Arzor, the Arzori dialect based on that of Akashadel is extensively used and only people with higher education in Arzor know Modern Standard Aryezi (MSA).

Aryezi is the official language of Aryez and Aryezizdar. In Arzor, even Modern Standard Aryezi is known as Arzori, and it is co-official with numerous other languages there. Both Modern and Classical Aryezi are widely studied in neighboring countries as well. These countries include Arnor, Arzdar, Loninya, Mandoria, and Chu. Aryezi has influenced many of these languages. Furthermore, the influence of the language of Arzdar and Arnor on Aryezi is immense as Aryez entered civilization through contact with those older civilizations.

The Aryezi language contains a rich body of literature and is known as a language of art, science, cultural, religion, and poetry. It was originally written in one of the Arnori scripts (Afrit or Arthad) before switching to the native Aryetetar or Aryezi Script which is derived from Afrit (this occurred around the time Classical Aryezi came into its full flowering).

Classification and Inspiration

In the world of Arel, in which Aryez is located, Aryezi is classified as an Aryezic language, a family whose only members are all the forms of Aryezi. However this family is related to the Mandoric family, which includes two languages spoken in Mandoria. This Aryezi-Mandoric Superfamily has no known relatives. The world of Arel has several other language families.

In reality, Aryezi is most probably an Indo-European language, but it would be its own branch of this family. While the language does have several similarities with the Indic, Iranian, Slavic, Romance, and Germanic branches, it falls in none of them, although it is probably closest to the eastern Indo-European languages. Some Aryezi vocabulary is IE, and its general grammar pattern in IE. However, Aryezi also displays much influence from the Quenya language of J.R.R. Tolkien. Aryezi also shares many features with non-Indo-European languages, especially Japanese, the Altaic Languages, and Semitic Languages.

Classical Aryezi was strongly inflected and mildly agglutinating. Modern Aryezi is moderately to weakly inflected and somewhat agglutinating. It is hard to describe the feel spoken and written Aryezi gives off.

Classical Aryezi (Aryeza)

Classical Aryezi was a highly inflected and expressive language. In addition, it was highly regular with few irregularities. To many, it was both a perfect language and a sacred language.

With the exception of words such as conjunctions and pronouns, Classical Aryezi, like modern Aryezi, divided words into three types: 1) Nouns, 2) Verbs, and 3) Adjectives. The Verbs had numerous cases, tenses, and aspects, and could be conjugated in numerous ways.

Classical Aryezi Nouns could also act in complex and wonderful ways. They were divided into three main "genders" or noun classes: 1) Animate, 2) Inanimate, and 3) Abstract.

They contained four levels of pluralization: 1) Zero, 2) Singular, 3) Plural, 4) Dual. Furthermore animate nouns could be further inflected to indicate three genders: masculine, feminine, and neutral.

Classical Aryezi nouns conjugated into ten (10) cases: 1) Nominative (subject) 2) Accusative (direct object), 3) Dative (indirect object), 4) Genitive (possession), 5) Instrumental (with), 6) Ablative (from), 7) Locative (at, in), 8) Lative (to, till), 9) Vocative, 10) Oblique (used when pre/postpositions modify the noun and when these modifications don't fall into other categories).

Basic Characteristics

Brief History

The origins of Aryezi are unknown as Aryezi has no surviving relatives anywhere else in the world. It is probable that the ancestors of the Aryezi People were somewhere from Arnor or a neighboring region. These proto-Aryezi were displaced and dissapeared from history when the more advanced ancestors of the Arnori moved in as they fled the expansion of the empire of Arzdar. Arnori seems to be distantly related to Aryezi.

It is likely that the early Aryezi were these displaced people who island hopped to the islands that would later become Aryez. Upon reaching the central islands, they spread north and south taking their language with them. Soon, kingdoms and cheifdoms began forming. In Aryez, the Aryezi ancestors encountered two groups of people. One was an indigenously group that was quickly absorbed into Aryezi, although some tribal languages survive in southern Aryez. The other was another migrating group, Kareili, migrating south from Mandoria (this group would be displaced in all of Mandoria itself except for the north by the Mandorians). Their language mixed with proto Aryezi to become the foundation of Aryezi.

At this stage, the language was known was Old Aryezi. Old Aryezi came in contact with the more advanced civilization of Arnor and Arzdar, from which it borrowed writing (from Arnor), and large amounts of vocabulary and culture (mostly from Arzdar). At this stage, the Aryezi language became a classical language of culture upon the unification of Aryez and combined native Aryezi elements with Arzdari elements. Around the time of unification, borrowing from other languages stopped because Aryezi itself became a prominent language and was spread by conquest to new places. It also took root in parts of Arzor as that region was conquered by Aryez (especially Ardor). Aryeza was more of a practical, gruff language. As the Aryezi empire receeded, Aryeza evolved into Modern Aryezi, a language that was taken by settlers to Aryezizdar and spread by the new Ardori/Arzori empire throughout all of Arzor. Modern Aryezi is a more soft, poetic, and romantic language.

Evolution from Aryeza

Aryezi and Aryeza has many different unrelated words for the same idea (introducted later in Aryezi or derived from different roots), or Aryezi words have evolved in many ways from Aryeza. As a result, there are many different words in the two languages. Examples include (Aryezi/Aryeza): öi/ëa (universe), perz/arda (earth), ülül/eden (people), zeher/khör (lord), ceher/öre (heart, soul), ruya/örora (dawn), skai (dragon), star (ice), and khua (law).
