Aryez has a long and rich culinary tradition.


Description of a Traditional Meal

A traditional meal in Aryez consists of four parts. Thus it is served on a plate with four compartments; one compartment that consists of about half the plate and three compartments that together make up the other half. Plates in Aryez are generally made of either wood of steel, depending on the means of the user of the plate or the formality of the situation (wood is the least formal, steel is more formal, silver is the most formal).

The main part of the meal is a grain based dish. In Aryez, this can either be rice or noodles (in rare cases, bread/nan). It is served with three "side" dishes. The sides must be:

1) a meat, usually chicken, sometimes lamb, pork, or beef 2) a lentil 3) a vegetable based dish (potatoes are the most popular vegetables in Aryez)

A mini saucer containing sauce (usually hot sauce, hot pickle, or salt) comes with the meal.

The meal is served with a soup which is placed in a porcelain bowl. The soup is to the left of the plate.

The meal is also served with a drink. The drink is placed to the right of the plate and is served in a porcelain cup. The drink is almost always steaming hot (black 70%, green 30%) tea, along which comes a mini saucer filled with either sugar or honey, although tea is usually only consumed with minimal amounts of sweetener. It is rare to consume water with a meal.

Usually the meal comes with a steel fork and a steel spoon of medium depth. A cloth napkin/towel is also utilized. Knives are usually unnecessary.
