Homosexuality in Africa
From Alterealitiky
Africa is probably the most mysterious continent of the Shiner World, in that it has rarely been visited by outside explorers. Still, there has been some attempt to piece together an LGBT timeline.
By country
- Algeria - Homosexuality, as far as we have information, is legal in Algeria. Situated in the midst of the Berber coast of the Maghreb, Algerian society is known for its very lax social and sexual attitudes, which were the subject of commentary from European authors from the pre-Thornian era onward. The mostly Berber inhabitants, although following the teachings of the Koran, have never adopted the harsh proscriptions on homosexuality, pre-marital sex, and gender seen in Arab communities.
- Egypt - Homosexuality is legal in Egypt, and Egyptian law has historically recognized same-sex unions, albeit on a lower standing than heterosexual ones. Egypt is often regarded as one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and archaeology would indicate that acceptance of gays has a long history here.
- Ethiopia - Ethiopian culture has an exceptionally well-documented LGBT tradition, with several of its historical kings (including the current one) openly taking male lovers. It has sometimes been written that Ethiopia, like many fairly isolated civilizations, has never developed a strong sense of sexuality as it is commonly understood today.
- Most of southern Africa has historically been a pansexual society in which various gender identities are accepted.
