[edit] Introduction
Announcer: Dateline, November 15th. The Last Thursday before Thanksgiving. Robin is met with an inconvenient occurrance and consults an old veteran from the days of Melee.
Robin: And then his head exploded, likely from the critical errors clashing with the relayed intel.
Ganondorf: All this from stray hairs in the bathtub.
Robin: And uncleaned faucets, Dragmire. Cant forget those.
Ganondorf: Jesus... Well, what was he doing before the kill-shot?
Robin: Factoring Brawlhalla's Epic Crossover Skins into Perfection.
Ganondorf: Perfection, What's that? And what does the free-2-play platform fighter Brawlhalla have to do with it?
Robin: Well, Dear Lord among Garudo, if you insist on knowing, Perfection is a hypothetical installment of The Super Smash Bros series where Ultimate's motif of 'Everyone is Here' is taken to its logical extreme and expands its reach to fangames and spiritual followers.
Ganondorf: Fangames? You mean like Smash Land, Crusade, and the Good Ol' SSF Duology?!
Robin: And Modpacks, Ganondorf, can't forget those dedicated fans. He's even set up an algorithim to pluck six fighters each from Rivals of Aether, Icons: Combat Arena, Brawlout and Brawlhalla. It was initially set to have but six out of each game's original cast of characters with Slap City and Indie Pogo exempt from this rule for lacking such characters. 82 official characters Plus 52 from the Underground and the 24 original fighters from the legacy Fighters alongside their 32 guests from those respective fighers and we have a staggering 190 unique fighters in this one title alone.
Ganondorf: Holy Shamoley! That sounds like a lot of fighters.
Robin: It is. Hence why he established the Mario Standard. Before today, it was at a solid thirteen fighters. But now we need to incorporate conceptual fighters into the hypothetical game just to keep up with these 'Epic Crossover Skins'
Ganondorf: Uh oh.
Robin: Indeed. I'm sure by now you've at least heard of the two crossover events of late that Brawlhalla has held to celebrate Shovel Knight and Rayman.
Ganondorf: Yep, the latter introduced Rayman into the full roster, making it an even fourty-two fighters. And with the added Mode Kung Foot to boot!
Robin: But his event and Shovel Knight's has spawned these 'Epic Crossover Skins'. Seven in all which are overlaid onto pre-existing fighters, which in the Algorithm's coding means that these fighters are to be dragged in as these guests' corresponding Echo Fighters.
Ganondorf: Can't he just take the Fighters on which these Skins are based and leave their templates be?
Robin: That's what I said! But the gods-foresaken contraption insisted on it saying that the Brawlhalla Characters can be used as Echoes to piece together what they can and cannot do in any other fighter.
Ganondorf: That doesn't make sense!
Robin: I argued that as well, but the response it spewed was and I quote: 'It doesn't have to make sense, I got a Monster Truck!'
Ganondorf: Aborted Argument?
Robin: And how. It's as if any argument against its own echo chamber is blocked on the spot.
Ganondorf: Yikes, I shutter to think of the damage this could do.
Robin: As do I, and this algorithim is uncomrpomising in its overreach. Of the seven fighters taken in as Echo Fighters for the crossover skins, each wave has taken a single fighter from the intended lineup of original fighters. Plague Knight taking off with Caspian and Globox getting Cassidy. The algorithm responded by picking two new fighters from the roster. With six original characters and seven forced Echoes, what do you think this leaves Brawlhalla with?
Ganondorf: Thirteen.
Robin: Exactly. Hence why I added conceptual fighters into Perfection's Algorithm. To buff up the Mario Standard and allow more fighters from each franchise by that, I mean Brawlhalla. Video Concepts include Dry Bowser and Paper Mario while Bowsette and Goombas have their own written and illustrated concepts.
Ganondorf: Good, that makes four free slots already.
Robin: But will it be enough? Believe it or not, a one in six chance of a crossover skin landing a repeat character is too risky of odds. It can take one or two more events like Rayman, but one of Shovel Knight's scale?
Ganondorf: Can't you just make your own concept fighters?
[edit] Lady Timpani
Greetings and Salutations, and welcome to Robin's Workshop where I tinker with an oddball choice of newcomer with a theme that lines up with the game whence it comes and today, we're going all in on -Lady Timpani- By now, Super Paper Mario has cemented itself as an experimental transition period for the series from the two classic titles that put this series into the more... Miyamoto-esque games of Sticker Star and Color Splash which were used by fellow concept creator Delthezin to build upon the champ himself with trace amounts of the first game sprinkled in for good measure. The subseries' second senshi would more than likely be a display of the creative characterizations IntSys poured all over the first three games as well as the unsung middle child of the five chapters in this story. Her role in the story as main deutragonist has tugged at many a player's heartstrings as Count Bleck's story was told little by little as the chapters rolled on by. And not to spoil any details on the endgame, but the capstone of her character arc was a satisfying conclusion to her story and the expansive nature of the early installments in Paper Mario's history.
In terms of how she could play, she would be lighter than the likes of Peach and Daisy, how much so depends on whether or not she is portrayed as a 2D paper character like Paper Mario or a full-fledged three-dimensional Fighter like everyone else. She makes up for it in being swifter and able to jump a bit higher, and the wings on her back can allow for multiple jumps like Meta Knight, Charizard or more recently Ridley. And yes, I did say wings as her form all throughout the game is as a small sprite called a Pixl which Mario used to navigate throughout the worlds explored in each chapter. Likewise certain attacks will use those same Pixls in combat such as Thoreau acting as a chaingrab for added reach. Cudge can be used to smack away opponents through her smash attacks. I'm sure Dottie can provide a unique little downthrow what with a 'Shrink and then grow back' groundstomp, and Barry can surround her in spikes for her dash attack. So far, we're building her up to be a more mix-up oriented fighter much like her much more iconic co-star but whether or not she can considered beginner friendly depends on how long you've been keeping your eyes on the game's choice in newcomers.
Since we're on the topic of Pixls and their use in combat, the special moves are no different in their treatment of the stand-ins for your then-usual array of partners. Starting with the Standard Special, Carrie can become a platform to further enhance her speed in navigating the stage. Side Special can have Timpani bowling along Boomer to set her foes up for a trap if not bricking them with a bomb to the face! Thudley can stomp the yard for your Down Special, it's just Kirby's rock ability but with an added shockwave effect. While her Up Special does not use a Pixl, this classy trick allows her to Super Jump like Luigi does in the game whilst also charging it up when she's grounded. Slim can be a unique guard ability if we're going for the 2D Model, not so much if they go the other way with her design. Finally, we have her Final Smash which summons her beloved Blumiere to cloak the stage in the night sky which rains shooting stars all over onlooking opponent as her Pixl brethren dance around her.
Bottom Line, this eighteenth fighter from the Mario Franchise can make for a fitting second rep for the Paper Mario series of stories whilst also providing another mix-up fighter to keep players on their toes. But for every Bandana Dee, there is a Son Goku. Where does Timpani fall on this scale? Well, I can name more likely candidates for another rep to buff up that Mario Standard. But as a symbol of change, for better or worse, Timpani represents that moment in the Paper Mario subseries of stories where we transitioned from the Goombellas and Lady Bows into the Kerstis and Big Paint Stars. I will admit, piecing together Fighter 18 from the Mario Series was not an easy task given that she was little more than a glorified Wiimote pointer. But by flexing our creative muscles, we've come up with a pleasant tribute to an underrated gem from the Wii's library that couldn't be more deserving of some more love if it tried. So what do you think of Tippi? Let us know in the comments section below and feel free to vote on whether or not she fits in. Link in the description below. Thank you for watching and until the next idea crosses my mind, the Workshop's closed.
