A tiny piece of metal from a destroyed robot then bounced off his nose, and he awoke.

In the primary timeline, the YB showed up a few months later and attacked him on the meteor. They succeeded in destroying his undead body, but his spirit remained; a final near-kamikaze attack by Top annihilated his spirit and sent him finally back to the underworld.

The Future Past That's Not Pretty

In an alternate timeline, the YB never destroyed Morton. He remained on the meteor for about a decade before it crashed onto Popstar. Another decade passed before he made it back to Star World and made landing in Koopa Village, where he began to infect others with the dark, undead magic that sustained him. Through this he began to ravage the planet, enslaving great swaths of the planet by altering them with the dark mist. As he came near to conquering the planet, he began genocides of yoshis, creatures whom he had never liked to begin with, but his undead outlook made him despise their happy lives even more.

Finally he had turned Star World into a barren wasteland, seemingly undead like him. He enlisted his son, along with his minions, into his great army, along with having the AI that had originally awoken him while he was stranded on the meteor installed as the primary computer of his castle. There were still a few resisters, though, including the greatest thorn in his side, a brown batamon with a green mask. During a scuffle with the resisters the mask fell off and he learned it was a former YB named Top. With this knowledge he had work done on a time machine that would allow him to kill Top in the past.

Morton traveled to the past and infected creatures with the dark magic, aiming to destroy the YB and kill Top. Eventually he changed tactics to kidnapping Top so that he could kill him personally, but the YB, along with the future Top, arrived and damaged his time machine, sending them all back to the future. The next day, the resisters broke into his castle with the aim of sending the past YBs back to their time to stop Morton's future. The resisters of the future then faced off against Morton to determine the fate of their timeline; the outcome of this final confrontation is unknown.
