Cooking with Mrs. Rayburn
From Torg Adventure
Ben was more than a little distracted as he watched Jennifer whip the batter together. It was obvious something VERY odd was going on... the amulet had to be the reason why. He flipped the thing over and over in his hand. It seemed that whatever he wanted, he got when he was wearing it.
"Hello, Ben!" He nearly jumped out of his skin when Mrs. Rayburn walked in, interrupting his train of thought. "What's going on?"
"Oh... nothing much, Miz Rayburn. Just cooking with Je-"
"I can see that much." She grinned, patting him on the head and pulling up a barstool. "Come have a seat, make yourself at home."
"Okay." Ben scratched his head a moment, then an idea slowly crept in. How far could this thing's power go? He closed his eyes, and thought of a situation he'd always wanted to be in...
"Hm." Mrs. Rayburn sighed, snapping him out of it. "Guess we're sort of in the same boat this week, aren't we?"
"Huh? How so?"
"Well, with the rest of your family on vacation, and my husband off in Indiana on his business trip..." It worked! Even though all those people had been at home this morning, he'd bent circumstances so that they simply weren't around anymore... and he was alone with Mrs. Rayburn and Jennifer. Ben's smile crept all the way across his face.
"Yeah, I know. It's kinda hard to get used to such a quiet house."
"Well... maybe you can stay over one night this week." She leaned over, planting a kiss on his forehead, and Jennifer poked her head out from the now-open oven.
"Cake's in and the timer's set, mom."
"Good. It'll stay warm `till dinner, then." Mrs. Rayburn stood up, brushing out her short skirt, and Ben grasped the amulet again. Perhaps it was time to have some real fun with this thing.
"Hey, Mrs. R?"
"Yes...?"
What to do with the Rayburns...?
